⁹ And ^(A)the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, ^(B)will weep and wail over her ^(C)when they see the smoke of her burning. ^10 (D)They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say,

¹¹ And ^(G)the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, ¹² cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, ¹³ cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.^[a]

^15 (H)The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, ^(I)will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,

And ^(M)all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off ¹⁸ and ^(N)cried out ^(O)as they saw the smoke of her burning,

¹⁹ And they threw ^(Q)dust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out,

²¹ Then ^(W)a mighty angel ^(X)took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,

¹⁵ “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. ^(A)Would that you were either cold or hot! ¹⁶ So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. ^17 (B)For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, ^(C)blind, and naked. ¹⁸ I counsel you ^(D)to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and ^(E)white garments so that you may clothe yourself and ^(F)the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, ^(G)so that you may see. ^19 (H)Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. ²⁰ Behold, I stand at the door and ^(I)knock. ^(J)If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, ^(K)I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. ^21 (L)The one who conquers, ^(M)I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as ^(N)I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

Do Not Love the World

^15 (A)Do not love the world or the things in the world. ^(B)If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world—^(C)the desires of the flesh and ^(D)the desires of the eyes and pride of life^[a]—is not from the Father but is from the world. ¹⁷ And ^(E)the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

^60 (A)Jeremiah wrote in a book all the disaster that should come upon Babylon, ^(B)all these words that are written concerning Babylon. ⁶¹ And Jeremiah said to Seraiah: “When you come to Babylon, see that you read all these words, ⁶² and say, ‘O Lord, you have said concerning this place that you will cut it off, so ^(C)that nothing shall dwell in it, neither man nor beast, and it shall be ^(D)desolate forever.’ ⁶³ When you finish reading this book, ^(E)(F)tie a stone to it ^(G)and cast it into the midst of the Euphrates, ⁶⁴ and say, ^(H)‘Thus shall Babylon sink, to rise no more, because of the disaster that I am bringing upon her, ^(I)and they shall become exhausted.’”
